One by One matched Catherine and Jasmine in 2018 when Jasmine was pregnant with her daughter Skylar, now 4. When Jasmine learned she was pregnant again, she called One by One and asked if Catherine could mentor her once more.
When they first met, Jasmine wasn't very talkative. Catherine was not deterred; she knew she needed to prove herself to Jasmine. "I worked on establishing a foundational relationship with Jasmine, and now when we meet it's hard to get a word in!" says Catherine.
Jasmine has worked hard to parent both of her girls well. She is serious about our curriculum and takes time to read through and complete her "Hello, Little One!" baby binder. Catherine and Jasmine still discuss parenting skills and strategies, but Catherine says they now spend more time in Bible study. Catherine says, "Jasmine thought of herself as a Christian. She believed in Jesus, but she didn't know what that meant or how to live our her faith." Catherine says Jasmine now has a desire to follow God and sometimes attends church with her.
Jasmine is currently working at Amazon but is looking to find a new job where she will have Sundays off so she can attend church regularly. Catherine is helping in this area as well. Jasmine has an interest in mortuary science, so Catherine arranged for her to meet with a mortician so she could learn about jobs and skills needed in that field.
Catherine is also mentoring Jasmine's daughter, Skylar,. Skylar's best friend, twin brother, and mom were all killed when a tree fell on their house after a storm. Catherine has been helping Skylar deal with her grief.
Catherine's advice to mentors? "Don't give up hope. Press on. Sometimes you think you're not having an impact, but you are. And it's more than what you say; it's also about what you do. Sometimes it takes years, but eventually you'll see results."
